Suncor's Komatsu 980E, carrying capacity of 369 tons.

Suncor, the Canadian energy company, announced the phased implementation of AHS at its oil sands mines, starting with the North Steepbank mine, and plans to deploy more than 150 automatic trucks throughout the program over the next six years, which will be the world's largest in electric automated vehicles. One of the big investments.

Over the past four years, the company has conducted a comprehensive assessment of AHS, confirming that AHS technology can be implemented safely and effectively under its operating conditions. The assessment shows that the technology has greater advantages over current truck and shovel operations, including improved safety performance, higher operating efficiency and lower operating costs.

"In the early 1990s, Suncor was the first company to switch from bucket wheel excavators to truck-shovel operations, and today we continue to be at the forefront of oil sand technology." Mark Little, Suncor's chief operating officer, said, "Being the first company to test the system and implement it on a large scale in our oil sands mining operations shows that we have a long history of embracing and adopting revolutionary technologies - it's just part of our innovation genes."

Automated trucks operate in a predictable manner and are dominated by a set of safety features, such as road maps and obstacle detection systems. "Safety is the first value for Suncor. Automated transportation reduces the interaction between people and equipment, which reduces accident rates and possible damage - enabling us to ensure that employees can safely go home after work every day." Little said.

Over time, the implementation of AHS will change the roles and skills of some employees in Suncor's operations. The company will work with the trade unions strategically to minimize the impact on employment. The current plan shows that the company's earliest appearance will reduce the number of heavy equipment operators on-site positions in 2019.

A phased deployment allows the company to focus calmly on each mine and apply the experience gained one by one.
