T 236 in Erzberg Iron Mine
Liebherr (Liebherr) recently began field testing of its latest mining truck, T236, a Swiss-based heavy equipment manufacturer that has taken another step forward in its goal of becoming a top supplier to the mining industry.
The new rigid dump truck, which uses a diesel-electric drive system and is Liebherr's first 100-ton mining vehicle, is being tested at Erzberg Open-pit Iron Mine in Austria.
Truck parts designed and manufactured for continuous use in the most extreme mining conditions allow longer maintenance intervals for Liebherr vehicle parts, saving time and cost.
"It not only represents a new direction, but also expands Liebherr's mining product line." Burkhard Richthammer, General Manager of Design and Manufacture at Colmar, Liebherr Mining Equipment, said, "And the development of this model truck closely draws on direct consultation with customers, industry experts, operators and end users to meet the current market demand."
After careful consideration, Liebherr chose Erzberg Open Air as the test site for the T 236, because it provides a variety of challenging operating conditions for field testing.
The vehicle runs 24 hours a day in the mountain environment, more than 330 days a year. Climate conditions will experience from - 20 C snow to hot summer, and the temperature in the pit can reach 40 C. A bigger challenge for the mine is that within a few hours, the weather will "switch" quickly between rain, sun and wind.
In addition, Erzberg has uphill and downhill transport cycles, changing ramps, and an existing 100-ton truck fleet at the mine, so the T 236 will be compared directly with these trucks working together.
Next year, Liebherr will provide pre-batch machines to South Africa and other selected locations around the world to further validate the performance of trucks.
T 236 plans to launch commercial sales in late 2018.
