Caterpillar has signed an agreement with Rio Tinto to revamp 19 793F mining trucks for automated operation at Marandoo Iron Mine in Western Australia, and Caterpillar will also install Cat Command for automated fleet transport software. The truck involved in the agreement is the first Cat automated convoy deployed by Rio Tinto.
The truck modification will begin in mid-2018, and the project will be completed by the end of 2019. After installation and start-up, Caterpillar and its distributor WesTrac will continue to provide management and support for automated transport systems.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Rio Tinto to install the first Cat Automated Transportation System," said Jean Savage, vice president of Caterpillar's Surface Mining and Technology Division. "We hope to work with WesTrac to help Rio Tinto improve its operations with our sophisticated mining technology."
Chris Salisbury, director of iron ore at Rio Tinto, said: "It's a great honor that we've been working with Caterpillar for 50 years and are excited to write a new chapter in the automation process. The goal is to make our operations safer and more efficient.
Cat automation trucks are powered by a full set of CatMine Star systems, including Command, Terrain, Fleet, Detect and Health. Marandoo Iron Mine-wide fleet deployment, scheduling and distribution and material tracking system is the first application of this system in Rio Tinto Group.
